Uni im Dorf 2024

Uni im Dorf - Außervillgraten

On the first weekend of Advent 2024, the 22nd edition of the ‘Universität im Dorf’ took place in Außervillgraten. Some members of our team were also on-site, hosting a workshop as part of the Young University and delivering an engaging lecture on the topic of social media and personality.

What is "Universität im Dorf"?

The ‘Universität im Dorf’ is a working group from Außervillgraten that was founded in 2001 and has since been presenting an annual lecture series. Its goal is to bring university knowledge to the local population and is aimed at everyone in and around Außervillgraten who has an interest in various fields of research.

What did our team do there?

Vivienne and Hannah from our MUSEMAP team organized two workshops for Saturday, November 30: Temperament and Music.

Workshop 1: What does your temperament reveal about you?
This station focuses on the individuality of children and adolescents. Using a short comic story, the most important temperament and personality traits and their role in everyday life are explained. By completing a short questionnaire (IKT – Inventory for the Integrative Assessment of Child Temperament), participants can directly receive an individual temperament profile. The profile provides insights into which traits best characterize them and highlights potential areas of strength. Additionally, children and adolescents can contribute as experts to an ongoing research project.

Workshop 2: Melody Genius or Rhythm Pro: Where Do Your Musical Strengths Lie?
At this station, children and adolescents have the opportunity to receive individual feedback on their musical perception skills. The task involves comparing different melodies, rhythms, and sounds. Are the melodies identical or different? Was the previous piece of music slower or the same speed? The test method used (PROMS – Profile of Music Perception Skills) provides immediate and detailed feedback on the results. A profile analysis offers insights into which areas of musical competence are most developed. At the end, the young musicians-in-training will receive a certificate.

Both workshops were conducted once for elementary school students and once for middle school students, tailored to the respective age groups.

On Saturday evening, a panel discussion titled “Living Together – Holding Together: Shaping Society” also took place, in which Vivienne participated.

On Sunday, Vivienne and Hannah delivered an engaging lecture on the topic “Between Pixels and Psyche: The Interplay of Social Media, Personality, and Well-Being.”

In our increasingly connected world, social media has a profound impact on our daily lives. Not only does it allow us to exchange information and maintain relationships, but it also shapes our emotional experiences and mental health. Social platforms are often accused of lowering users’ self-esteem, fostering dependency, enabling cyberbullying, and even causing depression. But how much truth is there to these claims? And do they apply to everyone equally?
In this lecture, we explore questions such as how social media usage is linked to our psychological well-being and how individual personality traits influence this connection. A particular focus is placed on temperament – differences in reactivity and self-regulation observable from early childhood. Based on current research findings and theoretical concepts, we aim to show how specific personality traits affect the risks and opportunities associated with social media use. Through live polls and collaborative discussions, we invite the audience to reflect on their own experiences and actively participate in the dialogue about the risks and benefits of social media.

All in all, the “Universität im Dorf” was a fantastic experience, and we are thrilled to have been part of it and the amazing team that makes this event possible year after year! 🤩
